Stanley H. Barkan, nato nel 1936 a Brooklyn, New York, è un poeta, traduttore, redattore ed editore. È cresciuto a East New York tra i tanti che sono fuggiti dall'Europa dominata dai nazisti. Era affascinato dalle lingue che parlavano e dalle storie che raccontavano su come e perché avevano lasciato l'Europa. Questo interesse per le altre lingue ha costituito la base della sua vita e del suo lavoro come esperto di intercultura, cercando avidamente di imparare le lingue. Durante i 27 anni di insegnamento nelle scuole superiori di New York, Barkan ha conosciuto la poesia di molti poeti in altre lingue e, infine, le opere di grandi traduttori, come Gregory Rabassa, con il quale ha sviluppato una sincera amicizia. Alla fine, come piccolo editore, ha pubblicato una serie di poeti in altre lingue, in 59 lingue diverse. Stanley H. Barkan, born in 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, is a poet, translator, editor, and publisher. He grew up in East New York among many who fled Nazi-dominated Europe. He was fascinated by the languages they spoke and the stories they told of how and why they left Europe. This interest in other languages formed the basis of his life and work as a cross-culturalist, avidly seeking to learn languages. Throughout Barkan’s 27 years as a teacher in the New York high school system, he acquainted himself with the poetry of many other-language poets, and, eventually, the works of great transla­tors, like Gregory Rabassa, with whom he developed a sin­gular friendship. Eventually, as a small press publisher, he published a number of other-language poets, in 59 different languages to date. His own poetry has been published in 23 different editions, in 28 different languages, including several bilingual ones (Bulgarian, Chinese, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, and Spanish).

THE CATS AND DOGS OF TEL AVIV

No dog will attack a cat in Tel Aviv.

At least not in some parts of town.

The cats go straight for the nose

—and that’s it.

So, in some parts of town,

the cats and dogs howl at the moon,

if not in unison, at least

in an armored peace,

some cats and dogs

learn to live together

—if not by choice,

then by necessity.

I CANI E I GATTI DI TEL AVIV

Nessun cane attaccherà un gatto a Tel Aviv.

Almeno non in alcune zone della città.

I gatti vanno dritti per la strada

—e basta.

Così, in alcune zone della città,

i cani e i gatti ululano alla luna,

se non all'unisono, almeno

in una pace blindata,

alcuni cani e gatti

imparano a vivere insieme

— se non per scelta,

per necessità.
